Wagyu Beef Kwetiaw @ Ginger Li, Jakarta

In my very first post, I mentioned that there are haute kwetiaws that rival Kwetiaw Akang. One of them is Ginger Li's wagyu beef kwetiaw.

Ginger Li is a newish Asian bistro in Kemang area serving classic dishes from Southeast Asia. "Oriental" fried rice. Seafood curry pot. Chicken satay. The menu is so predictable it's almost boring.

But while Ginger Li never specified which Asian cuisine it caters to, it certainly has its finger on the Indonesian palate. The dishes are savory, never too oily and are made spicier than their original Malay or Singaporean recipe, whether it's chicken claypot or Hainanese chicken rice.

Food is better than average and the restaurant is nice for hosting guests and friends. Oh, and did I mention they serve alcohol?

The wagyu beef kwetiaw is lovely as advertised. They use extra wide rice noodles and don't hold back on their shrimp paste and fried shallots. The wagyu beef is a welcome addition - although it may feel like a second dish at times because it seems to have been cooked separately from the kwetiaw and had sweeter taste to it. I eat my kwetiaw with plenty of sambel (chili paste), so that complements the beef really well.

I don't mind eating in Ginger Li, but I don't highly recommend it either other than its kwetiaw. It's a safe place to go to for casual lunch if you don't mind the ridiculous price. A rice or noodle dish costs around 90 thousand rupiah - which is more expensive than any pasta dish in a posh place in Kuningan or Senayan area.
