The wonderful thing about food in Jakarta is that you never quite get the same iteration of a dish. Even if that dish is as banal-sounding as fried rice or noodle soup, you know that when the restaurant is named after a person - its food rendition is owned and prided.
And so is the case with Kwetiau Akang. Situated in Chinese Indonesian enclaves around Jakarta, the eatery masterly combines stir-fry kwetiau (flat rice noodles) with crab meat and Chinese sausage. I'm a believer in the understated crab and rice combination since I discovered Fujian-style fried rice and crab porridge. In crab kwetiau, the seafood twist is more underplayed and casual but still works. Consumed with pork rinds and its equally famous wo tie, Kwetiau Akang is sure to deliver personal satisfaction when you're craving a Chinese food fix.
I should note that the crab kwetiau is an acquired taste. While it's not uncommon to hear locals citing Akang as the best kwetiau in Jakarta, Akang has a distinctive taste that may not necessarily please everyone, especially those who don't have a Chinese palate.
I, for one, still prefer the typical beef kwetiau over crab kwetiau at the end of the day, for which the competition disaggregates into loose categorization: street-style (Hayam Wuruk, 78) or haute (Ginger Li), Indonesian (Pontianak 555) or Chinese (Sumpit), and so on.
